Under his leadership the United States fought the Mexican War (–48) and acquired vast territories along the Pacific coast and in the. - President Polk writes in his diary about events on his last day in office and the inaugural ceremonies of his successor, General Zachary Taylor. President-elect Taylor, with a military escort, collected President Polk in his carriage at the Irving Hotel and they proceeded first to the Senate Chamber, then to the east portico of the Capitol.
